About this Opportunity

 

We are seeking a Lab Manager - Chemistry for our Covance Food Solutions group in Battle Creek, MI.  The scope of this job is to manage multiple groups within NCFS that conduct multi-disciplined assays to generate results, solve problems and interpret data of a scientific nature.  Responsibility of the role is to meet operational objectives within the cost center(s) reporting directly to the role.  All activities required of position are conducted in compliance and support of ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

  • Support compliance of ISO/IEC 17025:2005
  • May be required to assume responsibilities of Site Operations in the absence of the Site Operations Head.  
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Laboratory, identifies issues and bring those issues to resolution
  • Responsible for the allocation of resources (personnel, space, and equipment) in order to meet or exceed budget expectations
  • Assists with performance evaluations, staffing decisions and other supervisory activities for the assigned functional groups.
  • Reviews and approves work performed in NCFS for scientific validity and compliance with Covance SOPs.
  • Complete understanding of Covance SOPs as they apply to food testing services.
  • Provides technical guidance to the employees of NCFS.
  • Provides management direction to designated groups.
  • Assists in planning, marketing and project activities for assigned group.
  • Trains and mentors staff across NCFS
  • Works with the NCFS commercial and Technical Development teams to expand NCFS to new clients and to develop new services. *
  • Establishes client contacts for specific service or market segments.
  • Works with clients to design method development projects, method validations and testing programs that will meet client requirements. *
  • Prepares protocols, reports, and other documents associated with NCFS.
  • Interprets and implements policies affecting staff, fiscal and technical management of designated groups.
  • Discusses study problems or scope changes with appropriate personnel and suggests solutions and actions to solve problems. Manages the impact on time and cost.
  • Works with Human Resources to implement appropriate affirmative action, salary administration, and communication programs within the department.
  • Participates in client visits to NCFS. *
  • May have the additional responsibility of Managing Quality Systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • BS degree or higher plus 8 years of experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience or supervising teams.
  • Experience in the techniques of food, supplement, and ingredient analysis.
  • Familiar with industry standards, such as AOAC, USP, ISO 17025, etc.
  • Experience with GLPs and cGMPs (for Dietary Supplements or Medicated Feeds).
  • Skilled in performing presentations, leading meetings, time management, and planning.
  • Strong business acumen to understand the overall state of the business and make adjustments based on the following; labor reports, top and bottom line growth, managing expenses, profitability, etc.
  • Strong process and operational leadership background - Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification a plus.
  • Proven experience with customers and driving growth for a business.
  • Demonstrated ability for logical thinking, vision, and creativity necessary to function effectively with little structure or supervision.
