JOB DESCRIPTION

ABOUT THE POSITION: This position plays a critical role in data annotation and curation for the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) program, through diverse activities to gather, analyze, evaluate, and integrate information and analysis results using biomedical ontologies.  Activities include, but are not limited to, obtaining data via literature or electronic-based means, determining nomenclature and data object identify/uniqueness, judging information or analyses for appropriateness of incorporation into HPO resources, and evaluating and utilizing biomedical ontologies.  This individual must keep abreast of new scientific developments that are relevant to translational genomics, and should attend group meetings and seminars, as well as make poster and present posters/platform sessions at conferences.  Interaction with and participation in Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI) and Mammalian Phenotype Ontology (MPO) curation activities is expected. The individual will contribute to ongoing research and resource development to support accurate cross-species analysis of phenotypes and disease. Team participation in project development and software testing is expected, as well as collaborations with outside research groups and international bioinformatics communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Annotate data involving human clinical genetics, the laboratory mouse as a model for human disease, as well as functional and comparative genomics.
  • Participation in group meetings, software testing, project development, and support of collaborative efforts.  Keeping abreast with scientific developments through conference, seminars, etc.
  • Assist with training new curation staff, authoring project proposals, and responsibility for writing/maintaining curational documentation.
  • Training will be provided in use of software specific to project that role supports.

CRITICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Broad understanding of database principles, bioinformatics, and computational analysis techniques and data interpretation.

    •         
    • PhD required.

    •         
    • Able to multi-task on a variety of assignments while remaining focused and professional.  Needs to be flexible and adaptable in dealing with changing priorities and tasks.

    • Ability to thrive and meet aggressive goals and timelines in a fast-paced high-volume, and ever-changing environment

    • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to exercise initiative, comfortable working independently and as part of a team

    • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage details accurately
